چکیده

The Wisconsin Hα Mapper (WHAM) Northern Sky Survey has revealed a loop of H II reaching 1300 pc from the Galactic midplane above the Cas OB6 association in the Perseus sprial arm. This enormous feature surrounds and extends far above the “W4 Chimney” identified by Normandeau et al. and appears to be associated with the star formation activity near the W3/W4/W5 H II region complex. The existence of this ionized structure suggests that past episodes of massive star formation have cleared the H I from an enormous volume above the Perseus arm, allowing Lyman continuum photons from O stars near the Galactic midplane to reach into the halo. On the Formation of Perseus Ob1 at High Galactic Latitudes

The Per OB1 association, which contains the remarkable double cluster h and χ Per, is unusual in not having a giant molecular cloud in its vicinity. We show from Hipparcos data that the luminous members of this association exhibits a bulk motion away from the galactic plane, such that their average velocity increases with height above the galactic plane. We find HAeBe and T Tauri stars towards ...

Extraplanar diffuse ionized gas in a small sample of nearby edge-on galaxies

We present narrowband Hα imaging data of a small survey of nearby edge-on spiral galaxies, aiming at the detection of ‘extraplanar’ diffuse ionized gas (DIG). A few of our studied edge–on spirals show signs of disk–halo interaction (DHI), where extended line emission far above the galactic plane of these galaxies is detected. In some cases an extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) layer is disc...

The Ophiuchus Superbubble: A Gigantic Eruption from the Inner Disk of the Milky Way

While studying extraplanar neutral hydrogen in the disk-halo transition of the inner Galaxy we have discovered what appears to be a huge superbubble centered around l ≈ 30, whose top extends to latitudes > 25 at a distance of about 7 kpc. It is detected in both H I and Hα . Using the Green Bank Telescope of the NRAO, we have measured more than 220,000 H I spectra at 9 angular resolution in and ...

Tightly Correlated X-ray/hα Emitting Filaments in the Superbubble and Large-scale Superwind of Ngc 3079

Using Chandra and HST we show that X-ray and Hα filaments that form the 1.3-kpc diameter superbubble of NGC 3079 have strikingly similar patterns at ∼0.8 resolution. This tight optical line/X-ray match seems to arise from cool disk gas that has been driven by the wind, with X-rays being emitted from upstream, stand-off bowshocks or by conductive cooling at the cloud/wind interfaces. We find tha...

GHRS and ORFEUS-II Observations of the Highly Ionized Interstellar Medium Toward ESO141-055

We present Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph and ORFEUS-II measurements of Si IV, C IV, N V, and O VI absorption in the interstellar medium of the Galactic disk and halo toward the nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy ESO141-055. The high ionization absorption is strong, with line strengths consistent with the spectral signature expected for hot (T ∼> 10 5 K) collisionally ionized gas in either a “...
